One Man’s Treasure

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. (Matt. 13:44)

When farmhand Eli discovers a treasure chest buried in a field, he tries to convince his friend James to help him buy the field. Both men must count the cost and decide whether this treasure is worth the price they’d have to pay.

Christ’s parable about the kingdom of heaven gives us a dramatic, memorable story in just one verse of Scripture. This dialogue, imagining how the details might have played out, presents two distinct figures: a complacent skeptic who isn’t willing to take a risk and a visionary who will sacrifice everything to gain a priceless treasure.

This dialogue’s two characters are male but both/either can be changed to female without altering any lines. The skit’s running time is about 5 minutes. One Man’s Treasure also fulfills Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) convention guidelines for Dramatic Dialogues, as well as Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (FACCS) junior fine arts competition rules for Duet Acting.
