Rejected: The Inside Story follows aspiring mystery writer Nicole Pearson when she finds herself plunged inside her own novel. In her encounters with the bumbling, self-assured characters of her story, she begins to learn what it means to be doubted—and even rejected—by her own creation.
Set in 1958, Rejected features the incompetent Detective Breckenridge and his adroit assistant, Georgia Harrison. The two find themselves strangely interrupted in an investigation of theft and treason by the appearance of a disregarded maid named Nicole. While they interrogate suspects and examine clues, this prying maid begins to reveal a thorough knowledge of the case that perplexes Breckenridge and his assistant. Who is this Miss Pearson anyway? And why on earth does she call herself their author?
Although originally designed as a fresh look at the meaning of Christmas, this drama can easily be performed at any time of year with only a few slight line changes, and its message also works well at Easter. The play runs about 60 minutes in performance and has a flexible cast of 13-15 characters, most of which are gender-neutral (with some name and pronoun adjustments).
